Introduction to Social Work A: Social Issues

This module introduces the current social issues and the response of the social and community services field to these issues. A range of intervention methods will be explored and some key contemporary debates in social services analysed.

SWK2020:
Introduction to Human Development A: Developmental Concepts

This module introduces the life course perspective on human development. It emphasizes the importance of human development to social work practice and the development of social work interventions.

SWK2030:
Introduction to Social Work B: Policy and Practice Issues

This module provides an introduction to the context of social work practice: the impact of globalisation on practice and examination of the links between policy and practice.

SWK2040:
Introduction to Human Development B: Person and Environment

Students are introduced to key sociological concepts that influence human development and behaviour. A range of areas will be examined including issues of the psychosocial person, the spiritual person and narrative approaches.

 

 

SWK3220:
Social Work in Society

This module is an introduction to the field of social work, its history, theory and knowledge base, ethics, and role in the human services. The application of social work research knowledge in tackling the disadvantaged is highlighted.

SWK3230:
Social Work Research

Students will look at the place of research in social work and in the development of social work knowledge; the process and utilisation of social work research; the most commonly used social work research techniques and skills, emphasizing how the various quantitative and qualitative methods may be synthesized within the one research project, and the quantitative and qualitative methods data analysis.

SWK3240:
Working with Individuals

This module introduces students to direct social work practice with individuals. It examines the nature and definition of direct social work practice; examines some of the value-based and contentious issues in social work practice; considers theories that have influenced direct social practices; and examines a problem-solving model for working with individuals.

SWK3250:
Social Work Perspectives on Human Development

Students will examine a lifespan approach to human development with particular emphasis on life stage transitions, including death, variations in human behaviour, and the impact of specific life crises, and consideration of the implications for social work practice.

 

 

SWK3120:
Working with Families and Groups

This module comprises of two sections: ‘Group Work’ and ‘Family Work’. Group Work examines the historical development of group work; the group work process with emphasis on the beginning, ending and enhancing communication in groups; group leadership styles and terminating groups. In Family Work, family functioning is explained from a variety of theoretical frameworks drawing out the implications for practice.

SWK3260:
Social Policy and Social Justice 1

This module investigates the major political and ideological debates influencing welfare provision and its history. It examines frameworks for analysing contemporary social policies and social welfare philosophies. It also studies the legal mandate and legal processes which implement policies in the key human service areas, and outlines key legal dilemmas which impact on social work practice.

SWK3180:
Fieldwork Skills and Practicum 1
(Skills Module)

The unit focuses on the development of assessment and planning skills and related issues of practice. The aim is to enable students to develop beginning competence in assessment of and intervention into clients problems.

SWK4410:
Community Work: Theory and Practice

This module explores the concept of ‘community’ and its applications; the theory and practice of the various community work models (social planning, community development and social action); the role of community work in social work activities; and the skills involved in the practice of community work.

SWK4420:
The Individuals, Health and Society

This module provides an introduction to the social work knowledge and skills necessary for conceptualising and assessing health and mental health problems. It provides a framework for understanding contemporary health concerns which impact on the individuals and families who come to social work attention.

SWK4430:
Cross-Cultural Social Work Theory and Practice

Students will develop a framework for working with people in a multicultural society, and understand the complexity of cultural factors in people’s lives. It identifies the principles and practices necessary for culturally sensitive practice.

SWK4440:
Social Work Management Theory and Practice

This module studies organisational theory and structure, and research knowledge about organisations as a basis for assessing human service organisations. This knowledge is applied particularly in the areas of programme planning and evaluation, and organisation change.

SWK4450:
Social Policy and Social Justice 2

This module expands on the related first module (SWK3260) by drawing attention to particular ideological critiques of existing welfare states. The impact of globalisation is also examined.

SWK4460:
Critical and Creative Social Work Theory and Practice

This module comprises two parts: ‘Critical and creative Social Work Theory and Practice’ and ‘Child Abuse and Child Protection’. The first part dwells into the study of social work theory as a basis for the integration of social work knowledge and practice. ‘Child Abuse and Child Protection’ uses the same principles in examining the child protection field.

SWK4560:
Fieldwork Skills and Practicum 2

This modules enable students to develop beginning competence in assessment of and intervention into clients problems. It aims to enable students to develop the assessment and intervention skills required of a beginning graduate practitioner.
