Monash-SSTI Bachelor in Social Work
1. What are the requirements for admission into this programme?
To be eligible for the 2-year BSW, applicants must have a university degree or two years of a degree with in Social Sciences (e.g. psychology, behavioural studies, personality) and studies of society (e.g. sociology, anthropology, politics, economics, history, philosophy).
Applicants who have a degree or two years of a degree in a non-related area will also be eligible but are required to do two additional modules in the study of the individual and the study of society.
Applicants who have completed a 3-year Nanyang Polytechnic Diploma in related areas (e.g. Community Services Management, Nursing, Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy) or a 3-year Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Early Childhood Education will be eligible but are required to complete two additional bridging modules. These modules are offered by Monash through SSTI.
Applicants with polytechnic diplomas in other disciplines may also be eligible after completion of a relevant SSTI program (e.g. Diploma in Disability Studies) and two additional bridging modules.
Monash will advise on the number of bridging modules and the actual bridging module(s) to be taken by the applicant after the assessment of their prior qualification.
Interested applicants with A levels or experience in social services will need to gain entry into either an arts or social science degree, and complete a minimum of 2 years before he/she will be eligible to apply for the BSW programme.

2. How do I submit my application?
For applicants who are required to read the bridging modules, the application deadline is 31 July 2010. The application fee is $53.50 ( with GST ). Applicants will need to make an appointment with Wan yee( 6210 6668 ) or Yasmin( 6210 6672 ) during office hours( 9am - 6pm ).
Full application includes :
a) Completed application form
b) Original and photocopied academic certificate and transcripts.

3. Does this programme prepare one for most if not all forms of social work?
This course prepares students for all forms of social work including its many diverse fields ranging from child protection work to medical social work. The fieldwork placements in particular help students prepare for practice.

4. Will this programme be conducted in Singapore or Australia?
The BSW programme will be conducted in Singapore. However, students may undertake some studies including social work practicum in Australia if they wish to do so.

5. What modules will be taught and are there any hand-on besides theory?
There are 14 BSW modules altogether. There are twelve 6-credit modules and two 12-credit modules. (Please refer to course content outline). The two 12-credit modules are fieldwork practicum in which students undertake 980 hours of field placements in the local Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs). SSTI will co-ordinate these fieldwork placements.
Students are required to complete two fieldwork placement modules for the BSW programme. Students will be attached to a local social service agency for a full time attachment of about 3 months (490 hours) for each placement. Part time placement is available but student will need to discuss and co-ordinate with the fieldwork co-ordinator while fulfilling the placement requirements.

6. What are the course fees? How do I make payment?
The course fees in 2010 for Intake 7 is AUD$1950* per 6-credit module.
Payment is made payable direct to "Monash University".
Students will be invoiced per semester based on the number of module taken each semester.
There are altogether 12 6-credit modules for BSW (12 x AUD$1950*=AUD$23,400) and 2 12-credit modules (2 x AUD$3,900=AUD$7,800), so the total course fee is AUD$31,200. This does not include the bridging module course fee.
Fees are payable before the commencement of each semester and the amount will depend on the number of modules enrolled in that particular semester.
Each bridging module fee is AUD$1950*.
7. How long is the programme? How many times a week will the programme be conducted?
Whilst it is a 2-year course as a full-time student, the course can be completed in about 20 months. Classes will be conducted in the evenings. Students who are taking a full time study load of four modules per semester will be required to attend one tutorial session a month for three month for Theory Modules while skills module will be conducted once a week for 12 weeks.
Example :
Theory Module (3hrs per session x 3 sessions per semester) = 9hrs
Skills Module (2hrs per session x 12 sessions per semester) = 24hrs
There is a part-time option as well whereby students will be taking half of the study load, i.e., 2 modules. It will take approximately 4 years to complete the programme on a part-time basis.

10. Who accredits this degree? Is it recognised by NCSS?
NCSS does not accredit degrees. That is a function of the professional association. For social work, the professional association is the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW). This degree is accredited by both SASW and the Australia Association of Social Workers (AASW).
With the Accreditation from AASW, graduates will be eligible to practice as social workers in Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and in many other countries.

11. Are the lecturers from local or from a tertiary institution?
Professors and lecturers from Monash University will be teaching intensive classes in the run of each module. Local tutors who are experienced and qualified social workers will also be involved in the delivery of tutorial for each module.

The BSW will be conducted in the Social Service Training Institute, NCSS Centre, Level 4. It will be held in the evenings from 7pm – 9pm or 7pm –10pm, depending on the modules and semester.
