DSS101:
Overview of Social Services and Human Services Organisations in Singapore
This module gives an overview of the historical development of social services and the key players in social services in Singapore. Students will also learn about the types of services and programmes provided in the voluntary welfare sector as well as the structure and form of voluntary welfare services. This module is non-examinable.
Basic Counselling and Intervention Skills
Students will learn basic counselling skills and approaches to problem management through a range of role-plays and case studies. The limitation of basic counselling skills will be discussed and students will be taught on when and how to refer clients for further counselling treatment.
Group Dynamics and Facilitation
Students will explore group phenomena and dynamics in this module. Small group theories and group facilitation skills will be taught. Students will also discuss case studies of various client group contexts where group facilitation skills will be useful.
DSS104:
Basic Programme Planning, Organising and Evaluation Skills
This module will equip students with basic programme planning and management skills required when running social service programmes in agencies. Students will learn to run a programme from the planning stage, organising stage, monitoring stage to evaluation stage. Proposal and report writing will also be covered in the module.
DSS106:
Working with Volunteers
Students will learn about the role of volunteers in a voluntary welfare setting in this module. Issues relating to volunteers such as volunteer needs, motivation and expectations will be covered. Students will also learn about implementing a volunteer management system in a voluntary welfare organisation.
Working with Children and Youth
In this module, students will learn about the theoretical aspects of child development and understand the psychology and needs of youth. Intervention approaches applicable to as well as specific to children and youth will also be taught.
Working with Families
This module will cover topics such as family as a system, the types of stressors and their impact on family structure, among others. Students will learn about the different types of families in need (such as domestic violence, marital problems etc). The roles, services and programmes of Family Service Centres will also be covered.
DSS105:
Legal Provisions in Social Service Settings
It is critical to have knowledge of the key social legislation from which social service programmes are based on or adhere to. Students will learn about key social legislation such as the Charities Act, United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Children and Young Persons Act, Women’s Charter etc and how these are relevant to the social service sector in Singapore.
Working with Elderly
Addressing eldercare issues is increasingly important in an ageing population such as Singapore. This module aims to give students a basic understanding of the elderly and the issues that they face. Students will learn about the behaviour as well as the physical, psychological and social needs of the elderly. Services available for the elderly and their caregivers will also be covered in this module.
Working with People with Disabilities
Students will learn about the types, prevalence and cause of disabilities in this module. The needs and concerns of people with disabilities and their families will also be taught. Students will learn not only the various ways of communicating with people with disabilities but also on how to work with their families.
