Basic Research Methodologies
This module gives an overview of basic research methodologies within the social service sector. Students will learn how social research can help us understand and predict human behaviour and social life.

Written and Verbal Communication
Students will learn to be effective communicators, both in verbal and written skills. They will also identify different types of writing for various purposes in the academic and social service field. Practical skills for oral presentations will also be covered in the module.

Stages of Family Life Cycle Development
This module will equip students with an understanding of the family life cycle, which is a foundational knowledge base for social work assessment and intervention. They will also learn how to use family assessment tools and discuss various issues pertaining to the family.

Introduction to Human Behaviour
Students will gain an in-depth understanding of human behaviour and discuss how internal/external systems of the individuals and groups can have an impact on their behaviours. They will also learn about stress factors that affect a person’s ability to cope effectively in life.

Basic Concepts in Sociology
The module will cover topics such as sociological perspectives in contemporary living, macro and micro foundations of society and the social divisions that can exist. Students will also discuss how social change can have an impact on its environment.

Inter-cultural Understanding
Living in a multi-cultural and multi-faith society, students will discuss the concept and meaning of culture. They will also learn to apply inter-cultural sensitivity skills to establish effective relationships with people of different cultures.

Legal Protection of Children, Women and the Elderly
Students will identify the vulnerability of various groups in Singapore (e.g. children, women, elderly, people with disabilities, and people with psychiatric illnesses). Students will also learn about the legislations which are applicable for their protection and appropriate services available for them.
